Reptiles

Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that rely on external heat sources such as the sun to regulate their body temperature. Their skin is covered in dry, scaly plates which help protect them from injury and reduce water loss. Many reptiles use their strong jaws and sharp teeth to catch and eat prey such as insects, small mammals, fish, or other reptiles, while some species rely on camouflage or quick bursts of speed to escape predators or hunt effectively.

At Birdland Park & Gardens, you can see a range of reptiles including tortoises, lizards and snakes. These animals vary greatly in size and behaviour, with tortoises being slow-moving and long-lived, while many lizards are fast and highly active. Most reptiles grow slowly and do not reach breeding age until several years old, with some species taking a long time before they are mature enough to reproduce.
