Birdland introduces Monthy BSL-Interpreted Keeper Talks
Birdland Enhances Accessibility with BSL-Interpreted Keeper Talks for popular Feeding Times schedule.
Birdland Park & Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water is taking a significant step towards inclusivity by introducing British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters for its popular keeper talks.
Starting this June and continuing on the first Saturday of each month until September, deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors can enjoy live BSL interpretation during these informative sessions.
This initiative is made possible through a collaboration with the Gloucestershire Deaf Association, whose qualified interpreters will be on-site to facilitate communication and enhance the experience for BSL users.
“We’re thrilled to offer BSL interpretation for our keeper talks,” Simon Cox, Birdland’s manager.
“It will mean all our visitors, regardless of hearing ability, can engage with and learn about our diverse bird species.
“We’d also like to thank the Gloucestershire Deaf Association for their support in making this possible,” he added.
Located in the scenic Cotswolds’ town of Bourton-on-the-Water, Birdland Park & Gardens spans seven acres and is home to over 500 birds across more than 150 species.
Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits, including Penguin Coast which is home to the only colony of king penguins in England, Wales, or Ireland, as well as flamingos, pelicans, and parrots.
The park’s naturally-themed habitats and idyllic location alongside the River Windrush, make it a great day out for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers of all ages.
The BSL-interpreted keeper talks will be held on June 7th, July 5th, August 2nd, and September 6th. The sessions provide fascinating insights into the behaviours, diets, and conservation efforts related to the park’s avian residents.
